What is a breast lift?

Involutional mammary hypoplasia or loss of breast volume can occur because of a hereditary lack of breast volume and proportion or from normal aging changes, with loss of fat and glandular tissue and most commonly following pregnancy and breast feeding. The loss of volume in the breast, most notably in the upper breast poles is accompanied by a deflation, descent and flattening of the breast. Our SpaMedica® Cosmetic Plastic Surgery team and Dr. Krajden will discuss with you the breast lifting, mastopexy and/or implant rejuvenation options that are available to you.

Breast lift procedures can have several different types of incisions with variable degrees of lifting power and capability. The most limited kind of breast lift is an incision around the areola with removal of some of the loose skin. The second type of breast incision called the “lollipop incision” involves a vertical limb under the areola that stops at the under breast crease. Finally, the most extensive breast lift, mastopexy procedure called “the anchor incision” involves an under the breast scar together with the lollipop.

The breast mastopexy procedure takes approximately two hours to perform and is done under IV sedation or local anesthetic. Local anesthesia and some oral relaxation pills is a very common method of undergoing breast lift procedures. There will be a fully certified anesthesiologist monitoring your IV sedation and your postoperative care will be in Dr. Krajden’s certified SpaMedica recovery rooms, ensuring optimal safety as you will be managed by a well trained recovery room nurse.

Breast lift, breast mastopexy, and breast enhancement surgery all require several days for recovery. Your breast lift may be achieved through a breast implant inserted alone, or removal of extra skin from the breast to tighten the envelope and add more projection. Sometimes a combination of breast lift skin removal is combined with a breast implant. Breast lift surgery is very successful at achieving increased volume and projection as well as elevated nipple areola complex levels and there’s a high degree of patient satisfaction with the procedure.

Following your breast lift procedure Dr. Krajden may begin a series of laser treatments designed to minimize the risk of visible scarring. These laser treatments can also ensure that you have the greatest probability of avoiding capsular formation and for established capsules will help soften the stiffness that can occur sometimes following breast augmentation and breast lift surgery. Occasionally excision of soft tissue is combined with a breast augmentation at the single stage, whereas in many circumstances two stage breast rejuvenation, breast lifting, and removal of skin followed up by breast augmentation is recommended. Occasionally, and in the properly selected patient a large breast implant can eliminate the need for external breast lift scars.

Frequently Ask Questions

Who is a candidate for breast lift?

Women who have larger, droopy, heavier breasts that are aesthetically displeasing or do not match your body shape and disproportion. Sagging breasts, which are not large but are deflated due to past pregnancies, genetics, or aging and positioned too low on the chest. If your nipple areolar complexes (pigmented areas around nipples) are enlarged and/or pointing too far downward, combined with breast volume that is too large and droopy, or too deflated and saggy, then you may be a candidate for a breast lift.

What results can I expect from a breast lift?

You can expect smaller, perkier, more elevated and shapelier breasts. Dr. Krajden’s aesthetic judgment is for a natural appearing, anatomically shaped breast lift.

What is involved in a breast lift surgery?

The design of the incisions can vary but usually include incisions that extend around the nipple-areolar complex, vertically down to the fold under the breast (lollipop) and then, in some cases the scar extends horizontally along this crease (anchor).

In many cases, laser, radiofrequency or ultrasonic types of liposuction are used during the breast lift to remove fat and glandular tissue from the sides, helping to limit the length and extent of the scarring and improve breast and body contours. The nipple areolar complex is repositioned higher, the excess skin is removed, and the breast is reshaped in a pleasing contour and in a more normal position.

The short scar breast lift is often more cosmetically pleasing and does not include the horizontal scar under the breast. Often breast lifts procedures can be performed under local anesthesia alone, or together with light IV sedation.

The insertion of an implant as well, may or may not be advisable.

How quickly will I heal and is there pain associated with breast lift surgery?

You will go home in a bra with only light dressings over the incision lines 2-3 hours following your procedure. The bra is worn as a support dressing for 2-3 weeks. Sutures are usually completely removed within 2-3 weeks. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Light activities may be started in 7-10 days.

How much does a breast lift cost?

Breast Reductions and Lifts start from $5,999.00 to $8,999.00 depending upon the extent of surgery and if an implant is included in the aesthetic plan.
